Building Number 8 in the printed brochure
"Historic Buildings in Münchberg".
The sign is on the right, next to the entry door.
Already before 1534 the “Latin school” and the “German School” stood at approximately this spot. These buildings also fell victim to fires repeatedly. After the great fire of 1837 it was decided that only a new schoolhouse should replace the previous structures.
Due to the money shortage, the city took the not yet realized plans of the salt main office building in Reichenhall as the basis. In slightly elongated shape from the original they began to build “Schoolhouse I” in 1840. In 1879 the building was rebuilt and enlarged, so that there were eight schoolrooms and six apartments for teachers and their families.
The school was renamed “Luther School” on the 450th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther in 1933. In the following year an extension for washhouse and lavatories followed.
From 1952 the vocational school was housed in the building. Therefore, in 1955/56 an extension followed. From 1967 all of the vocational school classes, including the field branches came to Münchberg. At the beginning of 1980 cracks were found between the old and new buildings, and therefore construction of the new school was planned and was carried out in 1985/86. After the reconstruction work the city vocational school for economics and the vocational school for business assistants came to the Luther School.
From 1985 the adult education center used a few spaces for instruction. Since 1987 the city archives have also been housed in the building. There is now a lecture hall for 100 persons available to the two community vocational schools and the VHS (adult education center).
In May 2009 the annex was torn down. Subsequently the schoolyard and the area in front of the school were redesigned in 2013.
Since March of 2014 the city historical exhibition can be seen in a previous schoolroom on the second floor. There are explanations of the textile industry, brewing, crafts and other themes from the history of the city of Münchberg.
The times of opening are Tuesdays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Thursdays from
2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. or by appointment.
