Shooting House

In a writing to the city magistrate on October 17, 1890, the shooting society agreed to build a new shooting club appropriate to the city, and to dismantle the previous building. Two days later they agreed with the construction on the condition that it would also be possible to organize city celebrations and other activities there.

Since the middle of the 19th century there was bird shooting. An eagle with a scepter, crown and imperial orb was carried on a long wooden pole through the city before they tried to shoot it with muzzleloaders at the Shooting House. The best shot became the bird king. In 1910, for political reasons, the bird shooting took place for the last time. In 1911 a new eagle was purchased and installed for decorative purposes in the large hall of the shooting club (photo on the right above). It was renovated for the last time in 1955.

In 1945 gypsies and refugees were billeted in the shooting club. In a report it was afterwards described as “dilapidated”. One year later a fire of undetermined origin broke out in the club, which caused damage. The rooms affected by the fire were neglected and designated as “inhumane habitation” in 1947, so the refugees had to be relocated. In the same year an expert opinion stated that the conditions were “on the verge of decay”. Subsequently, the barracks were extended for residential purposes.

The main façade has three round arched windows on the upper floor, which are framed by a total of four half-columns. To the left and right are two niches, which held plaster figures which probably disappeared during the Second World War. A flat gable over the windows has a small round window in the center. Over the double entry door, framed by two rectangular windows the inscription “Schützenhaus" (English: Shooting House) can be seen. There stand columns, which are less ornately designed than those in the upper floor. A four-stage stairway with wrought iron railings leads to the middle section. The main building is flanked by two identical outbuildings, which each have two windows with overlapping webbing. In the 1960s a bowling alley was built. In 2008 the Shooting House was rehabilitated, in order to be able to ensure further growth.

Today different events take place in the building. The shooting club uses the back part of the building and has a shooting range there. The bowling club trains in the attached bowling alley. The parking lot in front of the building also serves as a fairground. Every year in July the "Wiesenfest" (English: meadow festival) is celebrated here.
