Building Number 16 in the printed brochure
"Historic Buildings in Münchberg".
The sign is on the right hand entry pillar.
The effort of the Münchberg citizens to have an expanded school has just lately been successful here. There was already a private Latin institution here between 1870 and 1890.
In 1908 Münchberg obtained a preparatory school as a first step to the teachers’ training college. The city built a building for them on the Hofer Street across from the city park in 1909/10. Factory owner Oskar Fleißner made the building site next to his textile firm available for instruction.
After the dissolution of the preparatory school in 1922 the city reached an agreement for the erection of a non-classical secondary school with six classes. In 1927/28 additional physics and chemistry classrooms were added.
During and after World War II the building was used as an infirmary and an emergency hospital.
Around 1947 the expansion to a nine-classroom school took place. In 1949 barracks had to be erected in the schoolyard and in 1950 an Abitur (diploma) could be taken for the first time. On October 1, 1957 the nationalization of the secondary school took place.
Since 1965 it is a mathematics-natural science school along with a modern language branch added later. In 1962 and 1972 expansion took place with class tracts, professional spaces and a triple sports hall.
Since 1991 there is a regular student exchange program with Lucan Community College in Ireland and since 2000 in irregular intervals with Prabade in Lithuania.
Since 2005/2006 the “Pikant” Canteen has been in existence at the secondary school, which has (by virtue of the increased all day operation) developed into an important element in the life of the school. They have already received several awards. 1st Prize “Eating for Health in the Catering of the Government Ministry” (2008); 1st Prize “Galileo’s Best” from German TV channel Pro7 (2009) and 1st Prize in the competition “With Each Other” of the Bavarian Broadcast (2009).
The school shines in addition with the following titles and awards: Environmental School in Europe (every year since 2009); Partner School of the Winter Sports and School without Racism, School with Courage (as part of a partnership project the MS Poppenreuth).
From 2009 to 2011 extensive school renovations were carried out as PPP (Public-Private Partnerships). Thereby the secondary school in Münchberg has become one of the most modern secondary schools in Bavaria. Every classroom is set up with interactive white boards and further technical advantages in order to optimally prepare students for the “real world”. For that reason around 14 million Euros have been invested in the renovation and modernization.
With the 2009/2010 school year the “Natural Science-Technology and Language Secondary School” offered the students of the lower school a core modeled after the daylong school.
In 2010 they celebrated 100 years of the secondary school in Münchberg.
