At about this spot there was at one time an early fortification, a tower hill with a manor house or farmstead next to it. Today this has completely disappeared. The original date can no longer be exactly determined. In most cases the building of such strongholds were in conjunction with the advances of early settlers into our area. The simple earthen fortifications with stockade reinforced outer walls, moats and a wooden or stone tower house and a manor house or homestead in the immediate vicinity served as a possibility for retreat in times of need. Its form was round, oval or angular.
In Upper Franconia there are about 130 known tower hill constructions, of which around 30 are of similar fortress construction in the region around Münchberg. Not far from the ford, the nearby streets could be observed and secured, and customs fees could be collected as well. In the first third of the 13th century a knight by the name of “Hildebrand of Munichberc” was supposed to have resided there. With the building up of the city on the mountain, the tower hill lost its significance. The designation “Wal” to the fortress at around the 15th century refers to a lost military construction.
Across from Station H29 on the other side of Luisenstraße once stood the birth house of the airship captain Georg Hacker. Today an electronics market is there.
