On the free green space in front of the current building, the prison stood on Bismarckstraße until 1980.
The buildings of the previous judiciary still stand on Hofer Straße (district court) and on Ludwigstraße (district office, formerly district court). There was also a prison in Münchberg, but it is no longer existing.
In connection with the city rights, Münchberg 1364 also received the blood jurisdiction. A gallows stood at the city park for execution of the punishment. But prisoners had to be taken into custody, which happened in the prison, formerly "Fronfeste" (soccage fortress).
With the city fire of 1837 almost the entire upper city was burned to ash. After that they thought about the evacuation of a few office buildings. In the course of the transfer to the newly erected buildings the expansion of the district court and the intended Fronfeste east of it were planned. Previously, since 1787, they were located behind the city hall, because the plan of 1779 to build the upper city gate with two prisons was not realized. But because in 1838 reconstruction of the regional court and the city pharmacy had to be transacted and the foundations had to be extended, the relocation of the Fronfeste behind the Royal Court of Justice followed on present day Amtsgasse.
In 1884 the Prison Commission of Münchberg described the conditions to the Royal Higher Regional Court in Bamberg and complained that the prison no longer served its purposes. There are six detention facilities available, of which, however, two act as holding cells and for that reason cannot be used by 3 persons. There is also no longer space to be found for work and there is no room available for an assistant or a maid. Furthermore, it is claimed that the curved fireplaces on wooden blocks were no longer stable, and could burn in case of fire, so that the heavy fireplaces would collapse. The inadequate completion of the prison yard offers many opportunities for the prisoners to escape and it is very strange that they do not make frequent use of them. The best security measures are still the closures of the rear house gates of the office buildings, provided they are handled properly. There are escape possibilities in the prison yard by climbing over gates and walls. Structural changes would, however, be tied to high costs.
Thereupon the agricultural office repaired the locks at the rear court buildings and the court gate between the district office yard and prison yard for 82.82 Marks. In the following inspection it is recorded that the prison yard is still found inadequate despite improved locks. The nail heads on the door are too poor quality and have too much space between them, so that the prisoners could grab hold of them and pull them up and climb over the gates. It would also be useful to relieve the Münchberg prison in such a way that all prison sentences of more than eight days are to be executed in the District Court Jail in Hof. At the same time this would have the advantage that the prisoners could be employed there, since no work has been introduced in the local prison.
The previous Royal Bavarian County Jail was still used until the end of the Second World War as a prison and on November 24, 1980 torn down. Today there is a small green space in front of the building of job center.
